What is the scientific thinking behind NOURISH?

The NOURISH diet helps you rebalance the key systems in your body that will then naturally bring about less cravings, ideal weight, and vitality. When you enroll with NOURISH you will be asked to complete a comprehensive health questionnaire that helps to illuminate if there are any system imbalances that may be hindering your weight loss.

The 5 key system imbalances the NOURISH diet addresses are:

Hormone Health Hormone imbalance
Complete hormone balance is fundamental to weight loss and management. Adrenal or stress hormones, thyroid and sex hormones, insulin, leptin and adiponectin are just some of our hormones and all hormones interact with one another in a dynamic way. When just one hormone is out of balance; (perhaps caused by erratic eating habits, stress, or poor food choices) physiologically we pay the price. Imbalanced hormones can lead to cravings, mood swings, energy slumps and weight gain, especially around the middle. The NOURISH food plan has been designed specifically to regulate blood sugar levels, boost metabolic rate and to address sex hormone balance.

Energy Levels Digestive imbalance
Your gut contains over 500 species of bacteria. They perform many roles from keeping “bugs” at bay to producing vitamins and conditioning our immune system. A sub-optimal diet (cakes, shop-bought sandwiches, pasties, pies, pizzas, muffins alcohol and fizzy drinks), antibiotic use, stress and some over the counter medication, can quickly lead to an imbalance in your gut bacteria. If harmful bacteria are allowed to proliferate, they can result in bloating, poor digestion of fats, water retention, inflammation and weight gain. The NOURISH diet will maximize gut health to aid weight loss.

Gut Health Energy metabolism imbalances
Your daily energy comes from tiny factories in your cells called mitochondria. If your diet lacks key nutrients or is full of refined foods and you have a high stress lifestyle, you may have reduced energy production. The NOURISH diet provides ways to enhance mitochondrial function and boost energy production.

Toxicity Liver health and detoxification imbalances
Toxins have been shown to block the function of receptors (called peroxisome proliferator –activated receptors, PPAR’s for short) needed for optimal insulin and blood sugar function. Research has revealed that toxins may cause increases in glucose and cholesterol levels and may also slow down the thyroid which governs your metabolic rate. The NOURISH diet is free of all the toxins that can lead to weight gain, such as artificial sweeteners, refined carbohydrates, excessive caffeine and, at least for the first 4 weeks, alcohol.

Toxicity Immune system & inflammation imbalances
Triggers such as stress, poor diet (man-made trans fats, sugar, processed foods), food allergens, an overgrowth of bad bugs in your gut and infections can all cause your immune system to produce inflammatory molecules (cytokines). If allowed to continue, inflammation can spiral out of control and will, in turn, cause insulin resistance and inevitable weight gain. Unfortunately, once we've gained weight, the fat isn’t inert and it in turn produces it’s very own inflammatory molecules - the cycle just keeps going! The NOURISH diet eliminates many dietary triggers to help create a less inflamed state and over the 8 weeks we will work with you to assess the likelihood of other causes of inflammation such as imbalances in the gut, environmental toxins and stress.
